Fourth of July Winston/Chloride NM

The motley crew casually known as the “Deming Wrecking Crew” so named by VFW Post 3317 of Williamsburg NM took a tour of a couple of small towns nearby. They would be Winston and Chloride. Below is the Motley Crew. This particular picture was actually taken in Chloride.

You can click on the images to enlarge them.

Names will be withheld to protect Me.

We first stopped at the General store in Winston. Quite the little place and had everything from food, hardware, tack and blankets.

Originally called Fairview, the town was settled in 1880-81 by miners who found the area more agreeable than nearby Chloride. By 1884, it had 3,100 people

The next stop was Chloride, which is just a few more miles up the road. On the way there a BBQ chuck wagon was spotted and was immediately tagged as the lunch stop on the way back. We traveled on up the road to Chloride and pretty much had to check the cooler and make sure the beer was still cold. It Was. About the first thing you see on arriving in town is the side of the museum and this building.

Under way 7/2/09

Well, I think that I have officially left Deming. I got on the road this morning about 5:00 am after a crappy nights sleep. I think it may have been anticipation of leaving. Feet hit the floor @ 2:30 AM. Arrived at Elephant butte State park around 7:00 am, and it was pretty much full due to the 4th of July weekend. Unhooked at a wide spot and headed out to find the Williamsburg VFW. Found it and got an OK to camp in their parking lot…Went back to Elephant butte and got the 5th wheel and headed for the VFW. After getting set up I of course went in to have a cool one. Cool, they are having a 9 Ball tournament at 2:00 PM.

Later on in the day, Faired OK at the tournament but ended of loosing. Oh well that happens quite a bit.

AT 3:30 The temp here hit 103…………………………………….I was sure that I had gained a bunch of elevation and was headed North. It sure don’t feel like it.

Petroglyphs

Yesterday, Saturday a couple of friends and I took a trip out the some Petroglyphs not far from here. What we found were a lot of them were missing. Yes missing,, someone has removed a large portion of them either just for the hell of it or to add to collections. However we did manage to find some with a lot of climbing around up high. We were just a tad over 5000 ft which in this area is only a 1000 ft above Deming. Here are a few pictures and you can make up your own mind. Some are fake and some are not.

Some grinding holes.

Time to post something. 6/19/2009

Back at the Blog again, at least temporarily. I made the big move today from Rockhound State Parkt to City of Rocks State Park. A grand total of 43.5 miles. Long Day. I had outlasted my stay of 21 days at Rockhound so had to move.

OOP’s. Guess I did not get them that day so I did today 6/21/09. This is the road into the park. The park is the rocks in the background.

Gila Cliff Dwellings

Today 2/24/09, I decided that I needed a break so I combined a Geocaching/Sight seeing trip to the Gila Cliff Dwellings.

The following pictures are in areas that I found Geocaches.

This Was really a neat place. The windmill was actually turning.

This is at the beginning of the trail into the Gila Cliff Dwellings.
The trail is 1 mile long, but is not a bad walk. The first half is a gentle climb up to the dwellings. The other half is fairly steep but is downhill.

Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument offers a glimpse of the homes and lives of the Mogollon people who lived in this area over 700 years ago.. The surroundings probably look today very much like they did when the cliff dwellings were inhabited.

These are some grinding holes.

Twas a pretty long day, so I'am off to bed. Left this morning around 6:00 AM and got back to Deming around 4:00 PM.

Later.

Forgot this one last night.

I stopped here on the way back from the Dwelling. It is called an Arrastra and was used to crush rock in order to get the gold out.
